Literacy

Developing Readers & Writers

Second grade readers strengthen fluency, accuracy and comprehension. They rely on a range of decoding strategies, phonemic awareness and spelling patterns to solve and spell new words. They explore new genres and move beyond beginning chapter books to longer books. Students respond to literature and learn parts of a story. Second grade authors explore a variety of genres and compose complete paragraphs as they expand their writing.

 

Math

In Second Grade, instructional time focuses on four critical areas: (1) extending understanding of base ten notation; (2) building fluency with addition and subtraction; (3) using standard units of measure; and (4) describing and analyzing shapes.
